Dr Strange
Dr Strange was one of only two Marvel creations of the 1960s in which Jack Kirby was not
involved (Daredevil was the other). Created by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee (the latter inspired by the radio show
Chandu the Magician, which he had enjoyed as a child), Dr Strange was very much Ditko's work.
Shaking off the shackles of traditional superherodom, Ditko gave Strange a magician's wardrobe and made him a
middle-aged, greying man, rather than the usual buff young hero. Ditko also displayed an amazing attention to
detail, filling Strange's pages with such eccentricities as floating pathways and disembodied heads.
Having made his debut in Strange Tales #110 (July 1963), it took Strange three years to make the cover, his
appearance on #146 being, ironically, Ditko's final Strange title. Dr strange was eventually given his own comic in
June 1968 with #169, but this series folded in November 1969.
